Hand-Arm Vibration Assessment – Spraytec Paintworks Limited

The Challenge

Spraytec Paintworks Limited operate a busy vehicle body repair facility where employees routinely use vibrating hand tools such as dual action sanders, grinders and polishing equipment. These activities present a risk of hand-arm vibration exposure, with the potential to cause long-term health conditions if not effectively controlled. The client required a clear understanding of their vibration risk profile and compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.

Our Approach

Peninsular Acoustics undertook a detailed on-site Hand-Arm Vibration Assessment to quantify vibration exposure across a typical working day. Measurements were carried out using calibrated vibration monitoring equipment, with multiple readings taken for each tool and operator to ensure representative results. This approach allowed variations in operator technique to be captured and assessed. Daily vibration exposure values were calculated using the HSE Hand-Arm Vibration Calculator, based on observed working durations and worst-case vibration magnitudes.

The Results

The assessment identified that employees were exposed to vibration levels above the Exposure Action Value. A daily exposure of 3.9 m/s² A(8) was calculated, exceeding the 2.5 m/s² threshold but remaining below the Exposure Limit Value of 5.0 m/s². The dual action sander was identified as the primary contributor to vibration exposure. Differences in measured vibration levels between operatives also demonstrated that working technique plays a significant role in overall exposure.

The Solution

A range of practical and proportionate mitigation measures were recommended to reduce exposure levels. These included reducing the duration of use of high-vibration tools, reviewing equipment to identify lower vibration alternatives, and improving operator technique through training. Additional recommendations included the introduction of damping measures such as improved grips or anti-vibration gloves, alongside the implementation of health surveillance to identify early signs of hand-arm vibration syndrome. A key finding showed that reducing the use of the dual action sander would bring daily exposure below the Exposure Action Value.

The Outcome

The assessment provided Spraytec Paintworks Limited with a clear and actionable strategy to manage vibration risk. By implementing the recommended measures, the client can reduce employee exposure, protect worker health and demonstrate compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.
