Plant Noise Assessment

A plant noise assessment is a typical requirement in the planning process for the installation of new items of plant such as;

  • Air condition units
  • Air Source heat pumps
  • Kitchen extracts and ducting.

Local planning authorities would typically request a BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 noise impact assessment, to either support the planning application or to discharge a planning condition.

A typical assessment would consider the proposed impact of the new plant on the nearest noise sensitive receptors (nearest dwellings potentially exposed).

BS 4142 is the standard used to assess industrial noise, from large scale industrial sites to small scale single items of plant. A BS4142 noise assessment report would be provided to demonstrate compliance. The noise report can either set limits of noise acceptable for plant, or can detail the acceptability of the proposed plant and any mitigation measures required to achieve compliance, such as enclosures, acoustic louvres, barriers, etc.

Peninsular Acoustics is a member of the Association of noise consultants and has an experienced team of Acoustic Consultants regularly undertaking plant noise assessments across England and Wales, in cities such as Liverpool, Birmingham, London and Manchester, for example.
